Last week I discovered a stack of cards and letters from Mark. Before I tell you how we met and the way our love story unfolded, I thought I’d begin by sharing one of the letters he wrote to me. This one, discovered just days before what would’ve been our 12th Anniversary, was written to me on our very 1st wedding Anniversary. Even though it’s private and personal (so is everything I write here), I am choosing to share it because it perfectly summarizes all the ways he loved me. It serves as a perfect reminder of how blessed I was to have been his wife. I was honored, cherished…loved.
In case you can’t read his handwriting, I’m retyping his words here.
My dearest Jodi,
My wife…
My lover…
My friend…
My partner…
My Love…
My Life…
The Lord truly blessed me
Beyond all measure
When He brought us together
Only He could fill my heart with enough love
For you.
Our first year!
A new life together, new daughters
New challenges, new discoveries,
New blessings,
And I’m amazed every day
How I love you more
Than the day before!
I cannot imagine how deep,
Wide, long,
My love for you can become as we travel together
Through this life
I watch you sleeping
And marvel at how beautiful you are
And when you’re awake,
Your smile dazzles me,
Your laugh warms me,
Your eyes… your eyes…
Your love for me mystifies me…
I sometimes wonder why,
But never how,
Or how much!
You are my fiercest defender,
My most tender lover,
My strongest mooring,
My family’s heart.
Words often fail
So I promise to show you
The depth of my love, every day
For the rest of our lives.
With you I find
Peace, safety, protection
Fullness, love…
Life.
Sigh. My pain is so deep because our love was so magnificent and my husband so marvelous.
Extra Grace,
Jodi
